What NPOP Stands For
NPOP — National Programme for Organic Production — is India's official organic certification and accreditation scheme administered by APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. It certifies that products are grown and processed according to organic standards without synthetic inputs.
Scope of Certification
NPOP covers organic crop production (no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides), processing (no GMOs, no prohibited additives), storage and handling, trading/export. Each farm, processing unit, and trader in the supply chain requires separate NPOP certification from an APEDA-accredited certifying body. Certification is valid for one year and requires annual renewal audit.
Who Issues NPOP
APEDA administers NPOP accreditation and oversees a network of APEDA-accredited third-party certifiers (private agencies and government bodies). Certifiers conduct unannounced farm inspections, review input records, test soil and water, and audit processing facilities. Each NPOP certificate carries the certifier's signature, certificate number, and expiry date.
EU Organic Equivalence (2011)
Since 2011, NPOP holds bilateral equivalence with EU Organic Regulation (EC) 834/2007. Products certified under NPOP can be exported to EU member states and labeled as 'organic' without separate EU certification or additional inspection. USDA NOP Equivalence (1998)
NPOP products are recognized as equivalent to USDA National Organic Program (NOP) since 1998. Indian organic products carrying NPOP certification are directly acceptable for import into the USA and can be sold as 'USDA certified organic' equivalent. No re-certification or additional documentation is required beyond APEDA Certificate of Origin.
