EU's New Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and Its Impact on Indian Agro Exports

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), effective from December 2025, requires importers to prove that agricultural products are deforestation-free. While India's agro exports — rice, spices, coffee, pulses — are largely from established agricultural land, the documentation requirements have changed. We explain what the EUDR means for Indian exporters, which product categories are affected, what due diligence documentation importers need, and how Radiance Overseas has adapted its traceability systems to ensure EUDR compliance for all EU-bound shipments.

EUDR and Indian Agro Exports: The New Reality

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which took effect in December 2025, requires EU importers to prove that seven commodity categories — including coffee, cocoa, and soy — did not contribute to deforestation. For Indian exporters, the regulation creates a documentation challenge rather than a fundamental sourcing problem, since India's agricultural land has been stable for decades. However, the proof requirements are detailed and new — and non-compliance means your shipment can be seized at EU ports with no right to compensation.

Which Indian Products Are Affected

Of the seven EUDR commodity categories, two are significant Indian exports: coffee (Karnataka, Kerala) and soy. Rubber, cattle, cocoa, palm oil, and wood are either not applicable or negligible for India. For Indian coffee exporters, EUDR requires: GPS coordinates for every farm in the supply chain, a due diligence statement confirming deforestation-free status, and supply chain documentation traceable to farm level. For soy (used in animal feed), similar farm-level traceability is required. Spices, rice, pulses, and sesame are not currently in scope but may be added in future reviews.

EUDR Compliance Checklist for Coffee Buyers

Before placing any EU-bound Indian coffee order after December 2025: (1) Confirm supplier has GPS coordinates for all source farms. (2) Request the due diligence statement (DDS) they will file with EU customs. (3) Verify the statement covers your specific contract lot, not just a generic certificate. Radiance Overseas has pre-filed EUDR documentation for all EU-bound coffee and has farm GPS data for 100% of source estates.

Documentation Protocol at Radiance Overseas

Radiance Overseas implemented EUDR compliance protocols from January 2025, well ahead of the December 2025 deadline. Our compliance stack includes: farm-level GPS mapping (via mobile geo-tagging of all contracted farms), supply chain documentation from farm to factory, due diligence statements filed per shipment via the EU TRACES system, and NABL-accredited testing for pesticide residues. Buyers receive the complete EUDR documentation package alongside standard shipping documents — no additional requests needed.
