Private Label Packaging for Indian Agro Products: What Importers Need to Specify

An increasing number of European and American importers are sourcing Indian rice, spices, and pulses for their own private label brands. But the specification process is complex — packaging material (PP, BOPP, jute, vacuum, nitrogen-flushed), labeling regulations (EU FIC 1169/2011, FDA 21 CFR 101), barcode formats (EAN-13 vs UPC-A), nutritional panel requirements, allergen declarations, and country-of-origin labeling all vary by destination market. We provide a complete specification checklist that importers should share with their Indian supplier, common mistakes that cause customs delays, and the typical MOQ and lead time for private label orders. Radiance Overseas offers private label packaging from 500g retail packs to 50kg bulk bags with custom branding.

Private Label Indian Agro Products: Getting the Specification Right

Private label sourcing from India has become mainstream among European and American food retailers. Indian Basmati rice, organic spices, and premium lentils now appear under retailer own-brand labels at Tesco, Whole Foods, Carrefour, and dozens of specialty chains. But the specification process is more complex than most first-time buyers anticipate. From packaging material selection to country-of-origin labelling regulations, from allergen declaration formats to barcode standards — getting any one element wrong can delay customs clearance or trigger a product recall.

Packaging Materials: Matching Format to Product

Packaging material selection is product-specific: Basmati rice: Transparent BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) for retail 1kg/2kg/5kg — consumers want to see grain quality. Jute bags for 25–50kg institutional. Spices (powder): Multi-layer foil-laminate pouches with zip-lock; barrier against moisture and oxidation is critical for powders. Sesame, pulses: PP woven bags for 25–50kg B2B, vacuum-sealed BOPP for retail. Dehydrated vegetables: Nitrogen-flushed foil bags — oxygen is the enemy of dehy products. All retail packaging must meet the destination country's food contact material regulations (EU Regulation 10/2011 for plastics).

EU vs US Labelling: The Key Differences

EU (FIC 1169/2011): Mandatory 14 allergen declarations, nutrition declaration per 100g, 'Best Before' date, net quantity, country of origin, business operator name/address. US (FDA 21 CFR 101): Nutrition Facts Panel (per serving + per container), allergens per FALCPA, 'Best By' date, net quantity in US customary + metric, country of origin for certain commodities. EAN-13 barcode for EU; UPC-A for USA. If you ship to both, request dual labelling — Radiance Overseas can print combined labels.
