What is NPOP Certification?

Yes — NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) is recognised as equivalent to USDA NOP under the India-US bilateral organic equivalency arrangement, allowing NPOP-certified products to be sold as organic in the United States without additional certification. India's NPOP standard is administered by APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce and has held EU Organic equivalency since 2006.

NPOP covers:

  • Organic crop production (field crops, spices, herbs)
  • Livestock and animal products
  • Wild harvest and forest products
  • Organic food processing and handling

NPOP certification is mandatory for all APEDA-registered organic exporters and is recognized worldwide as equivalent to major international organic standards. The certification is issued by APEDA-accredited certification bodies (e.g., OneCert, Bureau Veritas, NCOF, SGS India) after third-party inspection and verification.

NPOP Equivalency Recognition Table

USDA NOP United States of America 2012 Bilateral Equivalency
EU Organic (EC 834/2007) European Union (all member states) 2006 Equivalency Arrangement
Canada Organic Regime (COR) Canada Bilateral Recognized

NPOP equivalency arrangements are subject to periodic renewal by bilateral agreement. Current status: All three arrangements are in force.

What NPOP Certification Means for Importers

When you import NPOP-certified organic products from India, here's what you get:

No Re-certification in EU

NPOP equals EU Organic (EC 834/2007) since 2006. EU importers can sell NPOP-certified goods as organic throughout EU member states.

Frequently Asked Questions About NPOP

What is NPOP certification in India?
NPOP stands for National Programme for Organic Production — India's national organic certification standard, administered by APEDA (Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) under India's Ministry of Commerce. NPOP sets standards for organic crop production, livestock, wild harvest, and food processing. It is the Indian government's equivalent of the USDA NOP (USA) and EU Organic Regulation. All APEDA-registered organic exporters must hold NPOP certification.
Is Indian NPOP certification equivalent to USDA NOP organic?
Yes. India and the USA have a bilateral organic equivalency arrangement, in effect since 2012. NPOP-certified products from India can be sold as 'organic' in the USA under USDA NOP rules without re-certification. The exporter must provide an Organic Transaction Certificate (OTC) with each shipment, which US importers present to FDA. Radiance Overseas holds current NPOP and USDA NOP certifications.
Is NPOP equivalent to EU Organic Regulation?
Yes. The European Commission recognised India's NPOP as equivalent to EU Organic Regulation (EC 834/2007) since 2006, making it one of the earliest bilateral equivalency arrangements in the world. NPOP-certified products can enter the EU as organic goods. EU importers need the Organic Transaction Certificate (OTC) and standard import documentation. This equivalency is renewed periodically — it is currently in force.
How do I verify an Indian exporter's NPOP certification?
NPOP certificates are issued by APEDA-accredited certification bodies (e.g., OneCert, Bureau Veritas, NCOF, SGS India). You can verify: (1) Ask the exporter for their certificate with certification body name, certificate number, and scope. (2) Contact the certification body directly. (3) Check APEDA's Trade Data Portal. Radiance Overseas will provide our current NPOP certificate and OTC on request — contact info@radianceoverseas.com.
What is an Organic Transaction Certificate (OTC)?
An OTC (Organic Transaction Certificate) is issued by the NPOP certification body for each individual shipment of organic products. It certifies that the specific lot being shipped was produced under NPOP organic standards. The OTC is required by both US (USDA NOP) and EU importers as part of the import documentation for organic goods. Radiance Overseas provides the OTC as standard with every organic shipment.
Does NPOP certification cover all of Radiance Overseas's products?
Our NPOP certification covers: organic spices (turmeric, cumin, coriander, black pepper, cardamom, red chilli, fennel), organic herbs (ashwagandha, senna, moringa), and organic oil seeds (sesame, mustard). Products sold as 'organic' ship with full NPOP/USDA NOP/EU Organic OTC. Non-organic (conventional) products are clearly labelled separately. Our APEDA registration number and current certificate are available on request.
What does NPOP mean?
NPOP stands for National Programme for Organic Production — India's official organic certification standard, established under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). NPOP sets the standards, inspection, and certification process for organic farming and processing in India. NPOP-certified products are recognised as equivalent to USDA NOP (USA) and EU Organic standards, allowing them to be marketed as organic in those markets without re-certification. The NPOP meaning in practical terms: a product bearing NPOP certification can be exported as organic to the US, EU, and Canada.
