Indian Flax Seeds and Chia Seeds: Why 2026 Is a Defining Year for Global Oilseed Trade

EU's 50% additional duty on Russian and Belarusian flaxseed (in force July 2025) is redrawing the global supply map. Indian FOB brown flaxseed has firmed to ~€840/t — roughly 35% below Canadian conventional origin. India's chia export lots grew 50% YoY in 2024–25. Here's what procurement teams need to know.

The Market Moment: Why This Matters Right Now

Plant-based omega-3 is no longer a niche. It is the ingredient that functional food brands, supplement manufacturers, and bakery formulators across North America and Europe are actively scaling. And the two seeds sitting at the center of this shift — flax and chia — are entering 2026 under a very different set of trade conditions than any previous year.

The flax seed meal market alone is projected to grow from USD 11.8 billion in 2025 to USD 12.6 billion in 2026 — tracking a 6.3% CAGR through 2036, according to Fact.MR analysis published this month. Bakery and functional food applications in North America and Europe are the primary demand engines.

Meanwhile, a year-long clinical study published in Frontiers in Nutrition confirmed in late 2025 what the health food industry has long argued: plant-based ALA from flaxseed oil meaningfully raises long-chain omega-3 levels — EPA by 27–40%, DPA by 27–40%, and DHA by 12–26% across all dietary groups. That is a procurement signal, not just a headline. It strengthens the scientific credibility behind every flaxseed product on a European or North American shelf.

The EU Tariff Shift That Is Redrawing the Flaxseed Supply Map

This is the most consequential trade development in the flaxseed market in 2026 — and most procurement teams have not yet fully priced it into their sourcing strategies.

In June 2025, the European Parliament formally adopted Regulation (EU) 2025/1227, imposing a 50% additional customs duty on agricultural products from Russia and Belarus. This regulation came into force on 1 July 2025. Flaxseed — a category in which Russia and Belarus had previously enjoyed competitive access to EU markets — is directly in scope.

The consequences are already showing up in live pricing data. As of mid-March 2026, EU import duties on Russian and Belarusian flaxseed stand at 50%, with Kazakh and Ukrainian FCA offers stabilising around €540–610/t as the alternative supply base reprices. Indian FOB brown flaxseed (99.9% purity) has firmed to approximately €840/t (~$920/t), reflecting improved export demand as European buyers diversify away from sanctioned origins.

Canada's position is weakening on a separate front. Throughout 2025, Canada has been gradually ceding its leadership position in global flaxseed exports due to acreage competition from canola and soybeans and climate-related yield pressure. This structural retreat is opening premium market access — particularly in EU health food and bakery channels — to alternative origins including India.

Indian flaxseed exports primarily reach the United States, United Arab Emirates, and Canada, with growing volumes to Middle Eastern partners. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Odisha are the primary growing regions, with the rabi crop harvested between February and April.

Trade Intelligence — March 2026

Indian FOB brown flaxseed: ~€840/t (~$920/t) · EU tariff on Russian/Belarusian oilseeds: 50% additional duty in force since 1 July 2025 under Regulation (EU) 2025/1227 · Canadian organic flaxseed: >€1,300/t · India's cost advantage vs. Canadian conventional origin: approximately 20%

Chia Seeds: India Steps Into the Big League

Chia is no longer a Latin American monopoly. India's emergence as a meaningful chia exporter is one of the most significant shifts in the global seeds trade in 2025–26.

In the six months from June 2024 to May 2025, India exported 1,281 lots of chia seeds — a 50% year-on-year increase, with the US, Bangladesh, and Bhutan as leading destinations. For context: the US alone imports 20,000–25,000 tonnes of chia annually, primarily into health food channels. India is now competing directly for that volume.

The global chia market was valued at USD 0.89 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 0.97 billion in 2026, growing to USD 1.41 billion by 2031 at a 7.77% CAGR. North America holds 34% of market share. The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing market at 7.8% CAGR through 2031, driven by functional beverage launches in China and India — up 34% in 2024 alone.

Indian soil and climate conditions have proven well-suited to chia cultivation. Beyond the agronomic fit, Indian exporters offer faster shipping lead times to key import markets compared to Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina — the traditional supply base — with comparable purity, size, and nutritional specifications.

Supply Risk — Watch for 2026

Forecasted La Niña weather patterns in 2026 are projected to reduce South American chia yields by 15–20%, potentially pushing spot prices above USD 4.00/kg. European and North American buyers holding insufficient forward coverage face reformulation risk. Indian-origin chia — with competitive pricing and faster shipping to EU/US vs. South America — is positioned as the natural hedge.

What Buyers in 2026 Should Actually Be Asking Their Suppliers

The market data is only useful if it informs better procurement decisions. Here is what separates a reliable flax or chia supplier from a risky one in the current environment:
  • Specification compliance: Can they document moisture content, purity levels, and origin traceability per shipment — not just on request?
  • Lab testing: Are lab certificates issued per batch and independently verified — or recycled from a previous lot?
  • Pricing transparency: Is their pricing locked against Indian FOB benchmarks, or are they absorbing margin on spot volatility without disclosing it?
  • Certifications: Do they hold USDA Organic, EU Organic, HACCP, and ISO 9001:2015 — or just one or two?
  • Packaging flexibility: Can they deliver both bulk commodity formats and branded retail-pack configurations from the same facility?
  • EU compliance history: Have they successfully cleared EU Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) requirements across multiple shipments?
At this scale of global oilseed trade, one rejected container — on MRL grounds, moisture deviation, or documentation failure — costs more than the margin you gained on price.

India's Position in the Global Health Food Oilseed Supply Chain

India is not a new player in the oilseed export trade. It is a maturing one — with growing certified organic capacity, established processing infrastructure, and a cost structure that now has genuine structural advantages over North American and European origins in several key categories.

Flaxseed: Indian brown flaxseed at ~€840/t is roughly 35% below Canadian conventional origin prices at current market rates — and approximately 55% below Canadian organic pricing. Europe remains the leading market for health-food oilseeds, with 31.6% global market share in flaxseeds in 2025, and Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy among the largest importers.

Chia: India entered the export market later, but the 50% year-on-year growth in export lots (June 2024–May 2025) indicates that buyers are actively testing and approving Indian-origin chia against South American supply. As La Niña supply risk intensifies in 2026, that testing process is accelerating.

US demand for both seeds continues to grow, with functional food and nutraceutical brands incorporating flaxseed and chia into mainstream bakery, dairy, and protein bar categories at scale.
