India is the world's fifth-largest raisin producer, with shipments reaching 32,000 MT valued at $78 million in FY 2025-26. Sangli and Nashik districts in Maharashtra dominate production. Golden raisins lead export volumes at 60%, with FOB prices ranging from $1.80–3.20/kg depending on variety and grade.

India's Rising Position in the Global Raisin Trade

India's raisin industry has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, evolving from a primarily domestic market to a credible export player competing with Turkey, the US, Iran, and Chile. In FY 2025-26, Indian raisin exports reached an estimated 32,000 MT valued at $78 million, with year-on-year growth of 18%. The Sangli-Nashik belt in Maharashtra produces Thompson Seedless, Sonaka, and Sharad Seedless grape varieties specifically cultivated for raisin drying. Mechanized drying and sulfur dioxide treatment facilities have improved color consistency and shelf life. APEDA's raisin cluster development program has helped standardize grading practices across the industry.

Variety Profiles: Golden, Green, and Black

Golden raisins (sulfured, light amber) account for 60% of Indian exports and are the most versatile variety, used in bakery, confectionery, and snack applications. FOB prices for select-grade golden raisins range from $2.20–2.80/kg, positioning India competitively against Turkish Sultanas at $2.60–3.40/kg. Green raisins, dried under controlled shade conditions, are a premium product commanding $2.50–3.20/kg with strong demand in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asian markets. Black raisins (naturally sun-dried, no sulfur treatment) are the economy segment at $1.80–2.30/kg, primarily exported to Bangladesh, Nepal, and African markets.

Buyer's Tip

When specifying Indian raisins, always indicate the acceptable SO2 residue level — EU limits are 1,000 mg/kg for sulfured raisins while many Middle Eastern buyers accept up to 2,000 mg/kg. For organic or natural raisin requirements, specify black variety which requires no sulfur treatment.

Market Trends and Growth Opportunities

The UAE and Saudi Arabia together import over 8,000 MT of Indian raisins annually. Russia and CIS markets have become significant destinations, with Indian raisin exports to Russia growing 45% in 2025 as Turkish supply was disrupted. The EU market remains aspirational, with stricter pesticide MRL requirements and ochratoxin A limits requiring additional investment. India's cost advantage — approximately 20–30% below Turkish and US raisins on an FOB basis — is the primary driver of export growth.
