Jasminum grandiflorum (Spanish jasmine, called jathimalli or pitchi in Tamil Nadu) and Jasminum sambac (Arabian jasmine) are different species, and the oil industry treats them as separate raw materials. Grandiflorum is the species behind the classic fine-fragrance jasmine absolute. Fragrance houses describe it as floral, sweet and slightly animalic, and Indian lots are often described as greener and more tea-like than Egyptian or French ones. Sambac is the flower of the Madurai malli trade, and its absolute is usually positioned as a different, warmer jasmine note. In India, grandiflorum grown for extraction is concentrated around Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, where it is commonly cultivated under contract for the extraction industry.
Neither is steam-distilled for perfumery. The flowers are extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as hexane to give a waxy concrete, and the concrete is then washed with ethanol to give the absolute. Published figures put the concrete at roughly 0.2 to 0.3 percent of the fresh flower weight, with the absolute at about 50 to 70 percent of the concrete, and one fragrance house quotes about 660 kg of flowers for 1 kg of absolute. That low yield is why jasmine is sold in small, carefully specified lots, and why lot-to-lot differences in the GC-MS report matter.
Both species are rich in benzyl acetate, and linalool, indole, cis-jasmone and methyl jasmonate contribute to the recognisable jasmine character; the difference between the two is mostly in proportions rather than in which molecules are present. In practice, choose grandiflorum when you want the traditional sweet, green-floral jasmine heart for fine fragrance, soap or candle work, and request a sample of Jasmine Sambac Absolute as well when you want to compare a warmer profile side by side. Whichever you pick, approve the sample against the lot COA and GC-MS report before ordering in bulk, and check use levels against the current IFRA Standards for your product category.
