Nutmeg oil (Myristica fragrans) is steam-distilled from the dried, crushed seeds. ‘Therapeutic’ and ‘aromatherapy’ are supplier terms, not a regulated grade, so aromatherapy buyers judge a lot by its documents rather than its label. The ISO 3215 standard sets the composition ranges for nutmeg oil of the Indonesian (East Indian) type: sabinene 14–29%, α-pinene 15–28%, β-pinene 13–18%, terpinen-4-ol 2–6% and myristicin 5–12% (as adopted in the EFSA 2023 opinion). West Indian (Grenada) oils are reported to have lower α-pinene, safrole and myristicin and higher sabinene, and a weaker, less spicy odour.
Safrole. Nutmeg oil naturally contains safrole; EFSA measured 1.69–2.30% in commercial batches and classes the oil as a category 1B carcinogen on that basis (safrole at 0.1% or more). In cosmetics, EU Regulation 1223/2009 (Annex II, entry 360) allows the normal safrole content of natural essences provided the finished product stays within 100 ppm (50 ppm for oral hygiene products), and IFRA Standards also restrict safrole. The Tisserand Institute notes that East and West Indian oils contain quite different amounts of safrole and methyleugenol, and that its dilution guidance is built on those maxima. Myristicin and elemicin are related alkenylbenzenes that are also reported in nutmeg oil.
What each buyer asks for. An aromatherapy or wellness brand typically asks for a per-batch GC-MS report showing safrole, myristicin and methyleugenol, a COA and MSDS, and the data needed for its own dilution and labelling decisions. A fragrance house typically asks for the IFRA certificate and allergen declaration, and works out the safrole it can accept in the finished product.
