Indian Specialty Coffee Exports Surge 40%: How Coorg and Chikmagalur Are Going Global

India's specialty coffee exports grew 40% year-on-year in FY2025, driven by demand from European and Japanese roasters for single-origin, shade-grown Arabica from Coorg (Kodagu) and Chikmagalur. The Coffee Board of India reports that Arabica Plantation A and Peaberry grades are achieving premium pricing 20-30% above standard FOB rates. We profile the key growing regions, processing methods (washed vs natural), cup profiles, and how importers can source directly from estate-level producers through aggregators like Radiance Overseas.

India's Specialty Coffee Moment

For decades, India was known internationally primarily as a commodity Robusta supplier for espresso blends. That perception is changing rapidly. FY2025 data from the Coffee Board of India shows specialty and premium green coffee exports grew 40% year-on-year, with single-origin Arabica from Coorg (Kodagu) district and Chikmagalur commanding Cup of Excellence-adjacent scores. European micro-roasters, Japanese café chains, and North American specialty importers are now actively building India sourcing programs — many for the first time.

Coorg vs Chikmagalur: Cup Profile Differences

Both districts produce shade-grown Arabica at elevations between 900m and 1,500m, but the cup profiles diverge meaningfully. Coorg Arabica tends to produce a heavier body with caramel sweetness, lower acidity, and chocolate-forward notes — well-suited to filter and pour-over applications. Chikmagalur Arabica, especially from the higher estates above 1,200m, shows brighter citric acidity, floral aromatics, and a cleaner finish that appeals to light-roast specialty buyers. For Peaberry lots from either origin, expect a more concentrated flavour intensity — these command 20–25% price premiums.

Specialty Sourcing Requirements

Request the producer's green bean moisture content report (target 10–12%), screen size distribution, defect count (SCAA methodology), and a roasted cup report if available. For EU organic buyers, ensure the estate holds a current NPOP certificate with transaction certificate issued for the specific lot.

Processing Methods and Their Market Fit

Indian specialty coffee is predominantly washed (wet) processed, producing the clean, bright cup that specialty roasters seek. Natural (dry) processed Indian Arabica is rarer but growing — the Karnataka Climate Resilience project has encouraged more estates to experiment, producing fruit-forward, wine-like cup profiles that fetch significant premiums in the Nordic and Japanese markets. Honey-processed lots are also emerging. For institutional buyers (hospitality, café chains), washed lots offer the most consistency. For specialty retail, natural and honey-process command the highest retail price points.
